The Richest Man in Babylon

“Our prosperity as a nation depends upon the personal financial prosperity of each of us as individuals, theorizes the opening lines of The Richest Man in Babylon

This line had such an impact on me that I wanted it to be the first thing you read in my review also.

I have gone back to read that opening line multiple times and it occurs to me that this is the solution to many of our problems both as individuals and as a nation. In application it translates to the fact that, “Babylon became the wealthiest city of the ancient world because its citizens were the richest people of their time.”

So then one may pose the questions:

How did the people of Babylon become the richest people?

And that answer, my friend, can be found in the pages of the book. The Richest Man in Babylon is a collection of parables or stories that teach a lesson. This is the method that Jesus used to reach many with lessons in a way they can understand and relate to.

Despite taking place in ancient Babylon, these parables are still quite relatable, and the lessons are timeless. It’s a collection of ten parables:

  1. The Man Who Desired Gold

  2. The Richest Man in Babylon

  3. Seven Cures for a Lean Purse

  4. Meet the Goddess of Goodluck

  5. The Five Laws of Gold

  6. The Gold lender of Babylon

  7. The Walls of Babylon

  8. The Camel Trader of Babylon

  9. The Clay Tablets From Babylon

  10. The Luckiest Man in Babylon

These applicable parables narrate the following lessons and more..

  • You may never find wealth if you don’t seek it

  • A part of all you earn is yours to keep

  • There is abundance for all

  • Action leads to success

  • Better a little caution then great regret

  • We cannot afford to be without adequate precaution

  • Where determination is, a way can be found

Not to mention the Seven Cures for a Lean Purse or the Five Laws of Gold… this little book is packed with unparalleled knowledge for those who will take the time to learn and implement it. For it is not knowledge that is power but the application of knowledge.

I found The Richest Man in Babylon to be, although a quick read, a though provoking book that I am sure I will read again.
